6-Day Kilimanjaro Hike via Umbwe Route

6 Days 5 Nights

Overview

The 6-Day Umbwe Route is the shortest and most challenging route to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Renowned for its steep ascents, dramatic ridgelines, and remote wilderness, the Umbwe Route is best suited for experienced hikers and adventurous trekkers seeking a physically demanding climb. Beginning on the mountain’s southern slopes, the trail quickly ascends through dense rainforest before emerging into breathtaking moorland, alpine desert, and the arctic summit zone.

Although the route offers less time for acclimatization than other trails, it rewards climbers with spectacular scenery, fewer crowds, and an exhilarating sense of adventure. The route joins the Machame Route at Barranco Camp before continuing along the scenic Southern Circuit to Barafu Camp, where the final summit push begins. After reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895 m)—the highest point in Africa—you’ll descend via the Mweka Route, completing an unforgettable journey to the Roof of Africa.
