Overview

The Machame Route, often called the “Whiskey Route,” is one of the most scenic and rewarding ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Known for its spectacular landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and excellent acclimatization profile, this route takes you through lush rainforest, heath and moorland, alpine desert, and the icy summit zone before reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). The descent follows the Mweka Route, completing an unforgettable adventure to the Roof of Africa.

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Your adventure begins with a drive to Machame Gate, where you’ll complete registration before starting your trek through Kilimanjaro’s lush montane rainforest. The trail gradually climbs beneath towering trees, home to colobus monkeys and colorful birdlife, before reaching Machame Camp for your first night on the mountain.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp 2
Leave the rainforest behind as you ascend into the heath and moorland zone. The trail offers breathtaking views of Kibo Peak and the expansive Shira Plateau before arriving at Shira Camp 2, where you’ll spend the night surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery.

Day 3: Shira Camp 2 to Barranco Camp
Today’s hike follows the famous “climb high, sleep low” acclimatization strategy. Trek across the Shira Plateau before ascending to Lava Tower (4,630 m) for acclimatization. From there, descend into the scenic Barranco Valley, where you’ll spend the night beneath the impressive Barranco Wall.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp
Begin the day by climbing the iconic Barranco Wall, one of the most exciting sections of the Machame Route. Continue across the southern circuit through Karanga Valley before ascending to Barafu Camp, your final campsite before the summit attempt. Enjoy an early dinner and rest before your midnight ascent.

Day 5: Summit Night to Uhuru Peak & Descend to Mweka Camp
Your summit adventure begins around midnight as you make your way toward Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa. Reach the summit at sunrise and celebrate your incredible achievement while taking in breathtaking panoramic views above the clouds. After photos and a short rest, descend through Barafu Camp and continue to Mweka Camp for a well-earned overnight stay.

Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate & Return to Arusha

After breakfast, enjoy your final descent through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificate. After completing park formalities, you’ll be transferred back to Arusha, marking the end of your unforgettable Kilimanjaro adventure.
